Erica Davies, former fashion director of the Sun newspaper is now the proud owner of award-winning fashion blog, The Edited. It is now four years old, has 50,000 visitors a month and is monetised through sponsored posts, affiliate links, retainers with brands and spin-off work including consulting for brands.
What to learn from Erica
It’s definitely true that to succeed in the blogosphere, you don’t need any expertise other than that resulting from a genuine passion. But as in all things in life, genuine expertise and credibility sets you apart and gets you further, faster. Erica has found that both brands and readers love the authority that she has as a result of being the former fashion editor for the Sun newspaper.
Words of wisdom
‘As an editor, I’d always been behind the scenes at fashion shoots or the hidden influence in the articles I’d write. So when I first began blogging, I didn’t initially post images of myself at all. But a few friends suggested I should and so I somewhat reluctantly tried it. I immediately noticed a big difference in traffic and engagement. I was absolutely stunned. I remember thinking ‘Who on earth wants to see a 39 year old mum of two who is not a size 10.’ But it turned out quite a lot of people do.’
